I had the same problem and got around it in this way,mind you-I purchased all these WMA files!....Take the "protected" purchased WMA file(s), and using Windows media player burn it to cd. The file will look different at this point but plays with software ,as well as in cd rewritable players. ...To get it to the mp3 stage open the cd up with Windows Media player and choose the option,under tool I think, to burn the audio cd files to a file on your harddrive. The burned files will be in unprotected form and you should be able to convert them to Mp3's using this sites software,,,,Just as an aside...I was surprised to see that my portable cd player,which is a few years old ,but does read cd-rewritable cd's was able to read the WMA file I burnt to cd with the Windows Media player program ,(this was before evr converting it to Mp3 form)..have you tried this?

I just want to add that I'm having the same problem and my copy protected music button was already unchecked. I'll try burning my wma files and then converting them, maybe that will fix the problem. More later.

Thanks everyone for the tips. I want to purchase songs from Wallmart and add them to my iTunes (for use in my iPod) but they are protected .wma files. From your tips here is how I did it. Downloaded the protected .wma file from Wallmart. Opened it with Window Media Player 9 and selected "Copy to CD or Device" which copied the file to a CD-RW and resulted in a .cda file (not .wma - go figure!). I then opened iTunes and from the Source menu on the left I saw the CD icon. I selected it and dang if it didn't show the song!!!! I selected the song and dragged it to iTunes Library and it converted it to Apples AAC format and added it to the Library. It sounds great when played!

You may think I'm crazy but if so you might as well go live under a rock where ignorance reigns supreme and you can be sure for $175,000 for downloading your favorite tune.

I don't expect you to believe me when I say that illegal music downloads don't hurt the music industry. That would be very egotistical of me. Believe Harvard University.

I must say that one good point is brought up in the paper that I didn't quote. They mentioned that people who download music illegaly areless likely to go buy CDs. I think that's a no brainer that anyone can understand. I also hope everyone can fathom that maybe they weren't going to buy the CDs anyway in the first place but they liked a song on it and found a way to get it meaning that the illegal download had no effect on the record industry?

Some food for thought before you open your mouth again.

Lets get something straight for those music artists who think there getting ripped off by the average user. I PURCHASED your music and wanted to attach it to family slideshows, players, etc....but Windows DRM is just another way to restrict use within there format only. It's rediculous for us to be compiled in with thiefs when you legitmately buy something that you can't use in the way you want for non-commercial listening or video viewing. If I buy a 1 dollar song probably 5 cents goes to artist and the rest to corporate, so you artists should be looking to them for answers to your loss. I for one do not like paying for something that takes me days to figure out how to simply put on my mp3 player unless I buy more rights from MicroSoft affiliates for there fat pockets. Needless to say they are now making even more by reducing the costs of manufacturing by online distribution. So when people figure out there being screwed both ways that when they try to find a way around it that makes them into a so called thief. Look back over the last fifteen years and tell me how much it hurt the industry when people made copies of cds or tapes for friends and family....the labels are just getting more and more greedy
